The Baltimore VA Medical Center offers six paid positions available for a one year ocular disease residency. This ocular disease residency program will be conducted at the Baltimore VA Medical Center and is affiliated through the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Residents will also rotate with Dr. Esen Akpec through the Wilmer Cornea Service and Dr. Elliott Myrowitz through the Wilmer Refractive Surgery Service of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Residents also rotate through the Low Vision Service at Loch Raven VA with Dr. Olga Whitman, a co-management center with Dr. Robert Stutman, and Dr. Alan Robin, a glaucoma specialist, and Dr. Eric Suan, a retinal specialist.
Program: Consists of attending Thursday Clinical Conference and guest special lectures at the Wilmer Institute of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Tuesday
Morning Case Conference, Friday Morning Journal Club and Friday Afternoon Conference at the Baltimore VA Medical Center. Direct patient care - including the management and treatment of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal occlusive disease, anterior segment disease, and neuro-ocular disease. Pre- and post-operative care of cataract, glaucoma, penetrating keratoplasty, vitrectomy and retinal detachment cases. Perform special auxiliary
testing including fluorescein angiography, ultrasonography, fundus and anterior segment photography, Goldmann and Humphrey's automated perimetry,
pachometry, GDx and OCT. Observation of ophthalmic surgeries and laser procedures. The opportunity to work with other hospital divisions in the complete management of the patient. Research and library time to pursue a field of interest. Special external rotations in retina, refractive surgery, contact lens, low vision, glaucoma, ophthalmic surgery, and anterior segment disease.
Facilities: Baltimore VA Medical Center with state of the art equipment and nine examination rooms. New outpatient clinic at Loch Raven VA with five new examination rooms. Equipment includes Humphrey's HFA II perimeters, Matrix, FDT, corneal pachometer, A and B scan ultrasound, fundus and anterior segment digital cameras, NIDEK stereoscopic fundus camera, digital fluorescein angiography, argon and yag lasers, PAM, GDx and Cirrus OCT. Internet access along with library and medical media facilities are available. The Loch Raven Outpatient clinic has been recently expanded to five examining lanes. We have tripled the size of the eye clinic and have added an Advanced Low Vision Clinic at this facility. Additionally, this expanded clinic has new and updated equipment including a new Cirrus SD-OCT and MP-1 microperimeter.
Staff: six optometry attendings, six optometry residents, five optometry students, four part-time ophthalmologists, two full-time ophthalmology
residents, two technicians and one secretary.
Residency in Ocular Disease certification upon completion.
Accredited by the Council on Optometric Education.
